Recover 2022: Which part of the world will take the lead?

Travel and tourism are set to recover. New research by the World Travel & Tourism Council shows that the industry is expected to generate

North America

There are no quarantine restrictions for people traveling to the U.S., although travelers might be asked to show a negative result from a recent COVID-19 test (e.g., within 48 hours) before getting onto an airplane. Canada announced that it would open its border to fully vaccinated international travelers starting February 28 (Scherer, 2022). Inbound travelers still need a rapid antigen test, which is cheaper and can show results within minutes, instead of the traditional molecular test.

Europe

Denmark, having an 81% vaccination rate, was the first E.U. country to lift all COVID-19 restrictions. According to a recent BBC update (2022), the U.K. is also in the phase of removing all COVID-19 restrictions starting as early as February. COVID tests have been waived for fully vaccinated travelers in the U.K., either before departure or on arrival. Furthermore, people in England will soon no longer need to self-isolate even if they have COVID symptoms or test positive. A few other European countries have also announced plans to ease their travel restrictions, especially for vaccinated travelers.

Central and South America

Dominican Republic removed all COVID-19 restrictions starting on February 16 (Hulme, 2022). Mexico and El Salvador have also removed entry requirements.

Australia & New Zealand

Australia planned to reopen its border to leisure and business travelers with some restrictions starting on February 21, although the state of Western Australia, home to Perth, will not be open to either foreign or domestic tourists still (Pitrelli, 2022). New Zealand rolled out a five-step phased reopening plan, likely to welcome international travelers in July or after. Self-isolation for 10 days upon arrival is still required in New Zealand for vaccinated travelers.

Asia

The Philippines reopened its border in early February after a two-year ban on foreign travelers. In place of facility-based quarantines, vaccinated travelers are only required to self-monitor for seven days. Likewise, Bali, Indonesia, is now open to vaccinated international travelers. Other places like Mongolia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are also on the list of countries easing travel restrictions.

Africa

Morocco reopened for tourists on February 7 with strict measures (Fox, 2022). For example, travelers will need a vaccinated pass issued by the Moroccan government. They must also show a negative PCR test result taken within 48 hours from departure, plus other measures to pass the board and stay in the country. PCR test stands for “polymerase chain reaction” test, which is more reliable than antigen test but takes longer.

All in all, countries are taking different measures as they slowly reopen for business and leisure travelers. Meanwhile, countries like China still hold a strict policy called “zero-COVID.” Travel and tourism activities will return to the places that open their borders sooner than those having zero tolerance for the coronavirus.

Which country or countries will recover soon in 2022? For what reasons?

  1. Since March to now in April a couple of countries started opening up like South Korea back in the first week of April. In my opinion I believe that countries that have recovered slowly have been North America for they were one of the first areas in the world to reopen so they have had a bit more time to open up and "recover". I believe though if countries don't start with soft openings they will be putting their citizens and others at risk. Unfortunately COVID-19 is not going away meaning there should be some sort of restrictions like masks since it's evident that cases are starting to go up again as the world is reopening. -Karla Campos (HRT 3500 Section #1)

  2. Currently, the Korean government has made an exception to the application of the vaccine pass for the age group who did not get a chance to get vaccinated against COVID-19. It said it would lift all restrictions and offered a policy of free testing for vaccine pass. Now, more than half of Korea's votes were in favor of the need to change the quarantine system so that COVID-19 and daily lives coexist to recover the people's daily lives. It seems that Korea will gradually recover its daily life from now on. In addition, it is expected that social distancing will be lifted in 2022 as a step-by-step recovery will be implemented. -Seunghyeon Bae (HRT3500 section #1)

Luxury vs. Millennials and Their Technology: The Ritz-Carlton (By Julia Shorr)

Embodying the finest luxury experience, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC has been established since 1983. In 1998, Marriott International purchased the brand offering it more opportunity for growth while being independently owned and operated. They are known for their enhanced service level as the motto states, “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen”. The luxury brand now carries 97 hotels and resorts internationally and is attempting to keep the aspects of luxury while keeping up with the trends of the technologically improving generations. The Varying Demographics of the Target Market The Ritz-Carlton’s typical target market includes: business executives, corporate, leisure travelers, typically middle-aged persons and elders, and families from the upper and upper-middle class section of society .   This infers a large range of types of travelers in which all are similar in that they are not opposed to spending extra for the luxurious ambiance. Is It OK for Hotel Staff to Wear Piercings and Tattoos?

Time has changed. I see more and more college students wearing piercings and tattoos nowadays, but is it OK for hotel staff to wear piercings and tattoos? The answer is “no, no, no.” According a report at USAToday.com, customers across the board do not want to see any hotel workers with pierced eyebrow, pierced tongue, tattooed arm, or nose ring. Some may argue that tattooed and pierced workers may seem more acceptable in edgy boutique hotels as compared to the big franchised hotels, but the survey results did not find any differences among a variety of lodging products. Many respondents believe people who wear visible tattoos and piercings are taking a high risk of their professional lives. If you stay in a hotel, do you mind being served by tattooed and/or pierced staff? What if you are the one who makes the hiring decision?
