How Job Seekers Can Succeed in AI-Assisted Hiring

As artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized how businesses recruit and select talent, job seekers must also adapt to this new reality. This week, we shift the focus from how companies and HR managers can lead the process to how job seekers can use AI strategically to enhance their success in the job application process while maintaining authenticity, integrity, and self-awareness.

The Research

Acknowledging AI’s significant impacts on various HR functions, particularly the hiring process, my coauthors, Drs. Ning-Kuang Chuang, Yung-Kuei Huang, and I published a viewpoint article in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research. We discussed how job seekers can use AI tools strategically and responsibly throughout their job search.

How Job Seekers Can Stand Out in AI-Assisted Hiring

Job seekers who understand how AI systems operate across the hiring process can take greater control of their career search. Specifically, we propose six strategic ways to succeed:

  1. Search and submit job applications – Use AI tools to aggregate job listings, track applications, and identify new opportunities. Tailor resumes and cover letters with keywords that align with job postings, but always ensure authenticity to avoid detection of “AI-styled” content. Evaluate the legitimacy of job postings to avoid scams.
  2. Prepare resumes and application materials – Use AI responsibly to enhance, not fabricate, the materials. Learn how AI reads and scores resumes so you can align your materials with what machines look for.
  3. Prepare and participate in job interview(s) – Use AI platforms to simulate interview scenarios and improve their performance through feedback. Practice answering AI-generated questions naturally, but never rely on AI to generate live answers during interviews --- authenticity and honesty still matter most.
  4. Complete assessment tests – Treat AI-powered assessments as learning opportunities. Maintain integrity in all tests, seek clarification when unsure about scoring or procedures, and use feedback to enhance skills rather than seeking shortcuts.
  5. Prepare for a background check – Build and manage a professional digital footprint. Keep LinkedIn and other online profiles accurate and consistent with your resume. Use AI to self-monitor your online reputation and promptly address misinformation.
  6. Evaluate, negotiate, and accept a job offer – Before accepting or negotiating, use trusted AI tools to compare offers with industry benchmarks and simulate negotiation scenarios. Always remove personal data when using AI for analysis and seek clarification directly from employers if contract terms are unclear.

Final Thoughts

The growing presence of AI in hiring requires job seekers to balance technological fluency with ethical awareness. Using AI strategically can improve efficiency, expand opportunities, and refine communication, but personal judgment, authenticity, and professionalism will always define success.

How can we use AI to advance our careers without compromising authenticity? How ready are you to engage with “trustworthy AI” as both a tool and a test in the hiring process?

Comments

  1. One way we can use AI to advance our careers without compromising authenticity is to remember it is a tool made to enhance rather than to replace genuineness. So when preparing a resume, we should use it to correct grammar mistakes, ensure consistent formatting, help add quantifiers for measurable achievements and work responsibilities and etc, instead of using AI to draft a whole resume, which can lack personalization. AI can assist in refining how you present and communicate your strengths, but it should be up to you and your unique experiences and achievements to take the lead in the content of your resume.

What Shall We Do When Job Seekers Cheat the AI Hiring Systems?

AI can streamline the hiring process, but concerns linger. For example, AI could perpetuate gender or racial biases in the hiring process , just like most human HR managers could do. Meanwhile, to increase the chances of being picked by AI, job candidates must prepare resumes and job interviews tailored to AI’s “preference.” When more job candidates understand how to convince AI that they are the best candidates for the job , can AI still make valid recommendations to hire the best-fit candidate in the pool? Then, if AI makes a mix of valid and invalid recommendations for hiring, will HR managers find it more challenging to select the right candidate for the job? The situation can get even more complicated if a candidate cheats the AI hiring systems. Cheat to bypass AI screening: Is it the cruelty of human nature? Job candidates are eager to get hired. Career coaches want to help. That is a good thing. Nevertheless, I have seen many free online tutorial videos teaching job candidate...

How to Convince AI that You Are the Best Candidate for the Job

Last week, we discussed how more companies used AI to screen resumes and analyze job candidates’ performance in the initial interviews. We called for companies’ attention to the  potential AI biases in hiring . This week, we will visit what job candidates can do to help AI pick us and recommend us for hiring. A. Writing a Resume Tailored to AI Screening First and foremost, job candidates must thoroughly research the job and the company to understand its job descriptions and organizational culture. From there, they can: Write the resume in Word and submit it as a Word document instead of a PDF file. Select a straightforward format and avoid using graphics, charts, or complex layouts that could confuse AI. Use headings effectively to help AI pick up the content it seeks, such as “Relevant Job Experience” and “Education.” Strategically pick the relevant keywords that match the job descriptions as the job candidates describe what they perform(ed) at work. Highlight their achievements a...

Learn-by-Going: Study Abroad in Thailand (by Cecilyah New)

When I signed up for the 2024 Thailand Collins College Study Abroad Program, I did not anticipate a life-changing experience. I had no expectations beyond learning how to cook Thai food in Thailand for course credits, and I had not researched much about studying abroad before the trip. However, during my time at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi ( RMUTT ), I immersed myself in Thai culture, gained new insights into the hospitality industry, and broadened my global perspective in a new environment. Participating in this study abroad program has significantly contributed to my academic journey, professional development, and personal growth.   Academic and Professional Enrichment at RMUTT The Faculty of Liberal Arts at RMUTT and Dr. Kwok organized an intensive educational program that provided us with a comprehensive overview of hospitality and tourism in Thailand, along with an introduction to Thai history, language, and culture. On campus, we attended lectures that del...
