PC or Smart Phone: Which One Seems More Important to You?

Smart phones can do more and more for us these days. We used mobile devices to fill in almost every space in our lives. Meanwhile, PC seems to become a commodity product. To many people, PC is just another tool to manage data or do the jobs. Is that real? I bet many of us can easily recall the last time when we used cell phones in an elevator, in a bus or subway station, in a waiting room, in bed, or even in the restroom. The chances are cell phone will become, if not have become, the most important device in people’s lives. What do you think? Which device seems more important to you? PC or smart phone?

Also suggested in this CNN News video, security issue is the biggest obstacle of turning cell phones into “credit cards.” Yet, this concern can be solved when such payment method is processed with a cell phone user’s biometric information, such as figure prints. The day may arrive very soon when smart phones become a popular means of payment. What shall business do in responding to this mobile trend?

  1. I concur that smart phones is taking a bigger role in everyone's lives today, but not everyone has a smartphone. I personally have a smart phone and find it very useful to check my email or go on any websites while I am away from my laptop and am outdoors waiting for friends or the bus. Not everyone would agree that paying twice for internet, phone (3G,4G) and at home, is worth it.

PC definitely has its own pluses. It is easier to visualize and type with a PC. If work is not needed to be done, I think the smartphone would be more important to an individual. Concerning about turning cell phones into "credit cards", businesses should keep themselves updated because once that does happen, many would use cell phones as a form of payment.

  2. This topic is really interesting to talk about. It is true that a smart phone can do basically anything a pc can do but pcs are still needed, especially in the work force. Pcs are needed because people need bigger screens than a smart phone can provide for research and typing up documents. In addition, pcs provide keyboards that are much easier to type on than what a smart phone has for a keyboard.
Smart phones are becoming a part of people's everyday life activities and even starting to be able to turn on cars and pretty soon be able to replace credit cards. The opportunities for the advancements of smart phones are endless. I am not worried that pcs will no longer be needed because of the smart phone because they are both needed in different ways.
The smart phone is much more prevelent with all of its advancements coming out at all times but pcs have a timeless need compared to smart phones. Smart phones take up times in the day when you have nothing to do and want to check your email, play a game, or call someone. Pcs are when you need to sit down and get work or research done. Both are needed but for different reasons.
Overall I am not nervous about the advancing technology with the smart phone. Everything has positives and negatives to them and you just have to embrace the new technology.

  3. I agree as well that smart phones are becoming a part of everyday life. I think that this video explains and goes into great detail about how people are using their smartphones as more than just a phone. This raises a plethora of questions such as "Is there an end in sight for this technology frenzee?" or "how much more convinient can smartphones become?" Only time can tell, and at this rate, it doesn't seem like it's going to end anytime soon.
I agree when the video said that basically our entire lives can be on our smartphone; critical, personal information, ability to use it as a payment option, the apps and options are nearly endless and can have both positive and negative aspects to it. The obvious positive is that one small piece of technology, fitting in one's pocket, can easily do all the functions of a large, bulky computer, and do it even quicker and more efficiently. The negative, as stated in the video, would be that if this crucial smartphone is stolen or lost, the consequences and reprecussions can be much greater than simply losing a small, replacable pice of technology.
As someone who has a smartphone, I feel that being able to go on the internet, being able to check my email at a moment's notice, and do various tasks to pass the time is slowly and subconciously becoming a part of life. I am excited to see the next huge advancement in technology in regards to smartphones.

  4. "Mobile" & "technology" are the 2 significant word I catch in this whole exciting new technology trend. Thanks for sharing Dr. Kwok.

I truly think I cannot live without our smartphone nowadays. They are too convenient & allows you to do jobs(emails, calendar, contacts etc.) in a very effective way . Apple phones especially have too creative applications help your life.

Though in my opinion, I might stay in a conservative side of being too "advanced". People are getting smarter bringing positive way to our lives. But there are more people exploiting this privileged to a negative side. In comparison, I might think the negative side cause severe results (eg. stealling credit card information)

I have tried to do some research on this "mobile" trend. I found another short passage from Hong Kong newspaper site about people's "trust" on social media site: Facebook. The article stress the problem of FB in synchronizing our information to our mobile phone automatically. This creates problems in disclosing private information from users

Another is about new technology application developed in "mobile usage" as well.

  5. Computers and Phones have different purposes. With technology blooming those purposes are starting to get closer to each other but they are still different. I think it will be years before the smart phone kills the computer. People like big, they want a computer screen so they can do work, surf the web and watch movies. Can you imagine only watching a movie on your phone? I think if anything the smart phone and the new google TV idea will kills the computer first. They will have their television and computer in one and then their smart phone for when they are one the go. As for credit cards I still think people will be very hesitant to switch over. People are very funny about money and the idea of have your phone as money will take a long time for people are accept.

Is It OK for Hotel Staff to Wear Piercings and Tattoos?

Time has changed. I see more and more college students wearing piercings and tattoos nowadays, but is it OK for hotel staff to wear piercings and tattoos? The answer is “no, no, no.” According a report at USAToday.com, customers across the board do not want to see any hotel workers with pierced eyebrow, pierced tongue, tattooed arm, or nose ring. Some may argue that tattooed and pierced workers may seem more acceptable in edgy boutique hotels as compared to the big franchised hotels, but the survey results did not find any differences among a variety of lodging products. Many respondents believe people who wear visible tattoos and piercings are taking a high risk of their professional lives. If you stay in a hotel, do you mind being served by tattooed and/or pierced staff? What if you are the one who makes the hiring decision?
