More about Hotel Design?!

Yesterday, we discussed hotel design. Today, we are going to continue.

Yahoo!Finance reported Courtyard celebrates the brand’s 100th hotel with a “refreshing business lobby” (as shown in the video). The new lobby has more functional space and a cozier feel, in which guests may spend more time and get more accomplishments.

The Wall Street Journal suggests hotel design is a global trend. According to Dianna Wong, an entrepreneur of an architecture and design firm, hotel design will play a more important role than before, especially in the Asian market. She foresees more open bathrooms in guestrooms because more people travel alone and they want the “spa experience.” In addition, more aesthetic design is expected because design is associated with brand images.

More extreme? The Westin Hotels will open its “wellness store” at Amazon.com on March 1st. Westin’s sister brand W Hotels just hired a “Fashion Director” to oversee W’s hotel design and decors (http://linchikwok.blogspot.com/2010/02/how-would-you-like-to-work-as-fashion.html). Starwood attempts to sell “hotel style” in a retail venue.

No wonder hotel design becomes more and more important. It seems hotel design not only helps hoteliers distinguish their products from others, it also generates more revenues.

  1. I think it is great that there is an increase in the level of attention to detail and design in hotel rooms at all levels, even in motel 6! Just because you pay a budget price doesn’t necessarily mean you have to stay in a hotel with amenities and service reflective of the low price. This trend seems to be really taking off and I think this is especially evident in China because a lot of the large American hotel companies are just starting to tap into the market therefore all their hotel’s are new anyway and what a better way to kick-off in a new country than with sleek designs at not just high, but low prices as well.

There is less and less competition for run-down cheap hotels and in return Asian customers expect more and are willing to pay more when they go abroad to other countries, which is good news for America. The rising of standards are beneficial to societies as a whole because in turn they will expect more of their own homes, their own streets, and their own cities. Everything is related or comes together either directly or indirectly.

  2. Thank you for the comment. I like the designs of the budget hotels in Shanghai as well. Surprisingly, many budget hotels in Shanghai are a lot cheaper than I thought ($30/$40 per night). You may have known Motel 168 http://en.motel168.com/. I think this is a good example of Shanghai economic, modern hotels.

I actually took a hotel owner from Canton to experience the "new" hotels in Shanghai back in 2005. I think hoteliers in Shanghai are doing a exceptional job in product development.

What Shall We Do When Job Seekers Cheat the AI Hiring Systems?

AI can streamline the hiring process, but concerns linger. For example, AI could perpetuate gender or racial biases in the hiring process , just like most human HR managers could do. Meanwhile, to increase the chances of being picked by AI, job candidates must prepare resumes and job interviews tailored to AI’s “preference.” When more job candidates understand how to convince AI that they are the best candidates for the job , can AI still make valid recommendations to hire the best-fit candidate in the pool? Then, if AI makes a mix of valid and invalid recommendations for hiring, will HR managers find it more challenging to select the right candidate for the job? The situation can get even more complicated if a candidate cheats the AI hiring systems. Cheat to bypass AI screening: Is it the cruelty of human nature? Job candidates are eager to get hired. Career coaches want to help. That is a good thing. Nevertheless, I have seen many free online tutorial videos teaching job candidate...

Learn-by-Going: Study Abroad in Thailand (by Cecilyah New)

When I signed up for the 2024 Thailand Collins College Study Abroad Program, I did not anticipate a life-changing experience. I had no expectations beyond learning how to cook Thai food in Thailand for course credits, and I had not researched much about studying abroad before the trip. However, during my time at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi ( RMUTT ), I immersed myself in Thai culture, gained new insights into the hospitality industry, and broadened my global perspective in a new environment. Participating in this study abroad program has significantly contributed to my academic journey, professional development, and personal growth.   Academic and Professional Enrichment at RMUTT The Faculty of Liberal Arts at RMUTT and Dr. Kwok organized an intensive educational program that provided us with a comprehensive overview of hospitality and tourism in Thailand, along with an introduction to Thai history, language, and culture. On campus, we attended lectures that del...

Is It OK for Hotel Staff to Wear Piercings and Tattoos?

Time has changed. I see more and more college students wearing piercings and tattoos nowadays, but is it OK for hotel staff to wear piercings and tattoos? The answer is “no, no, no.” According a report at USAToday.com, customers across the board do not want to see any hotel workers with pierced eyebrow, pierced tongue, tattooed arm, or nose ring. Some may argue that tattooed and pierced workers may seem more acceptable in edgy boutique hotels as compared to the big franchised hotels, but the survey results did not find any differences among a variety of lodging products. Many respondents believe people who wear visible tattoos and piercings are taking a high risk of their professional lives. If you stay in a hotel, do you mind being served by tattooed and/or pierced staff? What if you are the one who makes the hiring decision?
